Day 1

1) The class will be given copies of the battlefield map with a grid. In this map they will plot out how to construct the terrain and features of the battle on a 40ft (North to south: length) X 30ft (East to West: width) piece of lawn on the campus.

2) Once the students have agreed on how to reconstruct the battlefield, the Union Students will then each come up with their own strategy. At this point the rules of the game will be given to the students. When everyone is finished with their personal strategy, the Union team will decided on a Master Plan.

-While the Union is working, the Confederate Students have time to begin to construct the battlefield with available resources. They can also start constructing together their Units to be used on the battlefield.

DAY 2

3) The Confederate students will now each receive a copy of the Union’s battle plan and each come up with their own individual plan. When all Confederate Students are finished, they will work together to decide on a Master Plan of attack.

-While the Confederate students are strategizing, the Union Students will finish constructing the battlefield outside and creating their Units for the battlefield.

4) When both sides have their strategies, the battlefield is constructed, and all units are created, students will then stake their Units where their unique battle plan places them. They may modify things as they get a feel for the space.

Day 3

5) Students will play the civil war game until either side wins.

-If there is time, debrief about the limitations of the game, things they learned and choices that would make differently.
